Learn more about the Masterclass: Sleep TrainingTeach Me Time
I cannot speak highly enough about using a visual alarm clock to assist with sleep training. This is the exact clock we used with our four children. Long before your child can tell time, they can learn that the color change on the clock means it’s a reasonable time to wake up and that a call to mom will be promptly answered.Â
White Noise Machine
A white noise machine is a nice addition to a child’s room but absolutely not a must. We started using a white noise machine after we had two or three kids sharing a bedroom. It’s great for kids to learn to fall asleep with a little noise in the household, but it is helpful to have white noise masking the sounds of other kids who wake up first in the morning to help the siblings sleep in a little later. This one has a built-in night light function.

SNOObie
This is another great option that integrates the white noise and visual alarm clock elements.

Air purifier
After the last really big forest fire, which lead to terrible air quality in the Santa Barbara area, we got air purifiers for each room in the house. They produce white noise, so this is an alternative to a white noise machine.

Baby Monitor
A reliable baby monitor with video is essential to sleep training. The model we used is outdated now, but I trust Amazon’s ratings, and this one got Best Overall Baby Monitor. It has 2 cameras to cover parents with 2 kids or to install in another room in the house.
Â
Blackout Window Shades
Roman shades are attractive, cordless for safety, and relatively easy to install. Get the blackout kind to help kids fall asleep at a reasonable, early bedtime and sleep in past sunrise, even on those short summer nights!
Â
Door Movement Alarm
This is not an essential item but can be handy for sleep training toddlers using the Back to Bed approach. Rather than having to camp outside their door to monitor them staying in their room at tuck-in time, get a digital alert.
Foam Door Stop
These door stoppers are super helpful for young sleepers who are learning to get up at night to use the potty quietly. Make it easier for those little ones to open doors without loud noises waking up other sleepers. As a bonus, you can keep them on the door all day and minimize the risk of little fingers getting slammed in doors.
Goodnight Moon
This beloved bedtime story has a wonderful cadence that will lull your little ones right to sleep.
